The Enemy Within – Resurgence of the Insider Threat by Joe Krull - CISSP, CISA, IAM, CRISC, CIPP, and Senior Analyst at Aite Group

Abstract

COVID-19 and remote work resulted in less direct supervision and oversight, coupled with increased demands on employees and contractors. This exacerbated the insider threat challenge. Insider threat falls into two distinct categories: malicious activity with clear intent, and inadvertent dangerous activity because of user errors. Both will impact organizations of all sizes in 2021 and beyond as remote and hybrid workforces persist due to reluctance by some members of the workforce to return to the workplace. Insider threat has always been part of an organization’s risk matrix but has been frequently deemphasized in recent years due to much higher-profile external threats, including ransomware, phishing, business email compromise, and API-based attacks. This session includes Aite Group research and recommendations to detect and minimize insider threat.
